Research has shown that one in every 5 people struggle with dandruff. It is one of the most embarrassing and pervasive hair problems, and everybody experiences this at least once in their lifetime!
So, what causes dandruff?
Dandruff happens when the scalp becomes dry or greasy and starts creating white flakes of dead skin as a result. Modern lifestyle with pollution, stress and unhealthy food choices make dandruff almost unavoidable. As per Ayurveda, dandruff or darunak classified under Shudra Roga occurs due to the imbalance of the three doshas – Pitta, Kapha and Vata especially. This imbalance results in impurities, which further accumulates in the deep tissues of the scalp leading to itchy scalp and white flakes.
How to get rid of it?
Thanks to Ayurveda, we have solutions for dandruff that are inexpensive and available in our kitchens. Here are some homemade solutions that will soothe Pitta-Vata imbalance and reduce dandruff.

Camphor with Coconut Oil
This remedy will control and combat dandruff and will give you miraculous results. While the cooling properties of camphor provide instant relief to the itchy scalp, coconut oil neutralises the worst symptoms of dandruff.
Mix two cubes of camphor with organic coconut oil and wait for it to dissolve. After it has dissolved, apply it on your scalp and massage for 15 minutes and wash your hair after 1 hour. Repeat this process every day for a few weeks or until dandruff has vanished completely.

Amla Tulsi paste
Amla which is rich in Vitamin C cures dryness, itchiness and dandruff formation. Amla, when coupled with Tulsi leaves, puts an end to dandruff problem for once and all. These medicinal plants are rich in antibacterial properties that will give relief to the irritated scalp.
Make a paste of Amla powder. Grind 10-12 Tulsi leaves with a little water and then mix it with the Amla paste. Now, apply this paste thoroughly on your scalp and let it be for 30-40 minutes. Wash your hair with cold water afterwards.

Neem leaves with lemon
Neem is known for its antifungal, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which make it appropriate for fighting stubborn dandruff. Neem and lemon will prevent dandruff from recurring as well.
First, make a paste of neem leaves and then mix it with the juice of half a lemon. Apply this mixture to your scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing it off. For best results, apply this paste twice per week.

Fenugreek seeds paste
The paste of fenugreek seeds is yet another way of dealing with dandruff. Fenugreek seeds will not only prevent white flakes but will also promote healthy hair growth. Its high protein and nicotinic acid content make complete elimination of dandruff possible.
Soak fenugreek seeds in a bowl for a night and grind the seeds into a smooth paste the next day. Make sure to blend them well. Apply this thoroughly on your scalp for about 20-30 minutes and rinse it with cold water and mild shampoo. Applying this often will improve your scalp health.
Dandruff can cause a lot of discomfort and frustration, but not only will these home remedies eliminate this problem but will enrich the quality of your hair as well.
